String quartets by Akshaya Tucker (Hollow Flame), Lei Liang (Gobi Gloria) and Kareem Roustom (Syrian Folk Songs), eachonly ten minutes, demonstrate the amazing depth of this genre centuries after its first appearance around 1760. Brahms’s tempestuous Piano Quartet No. 3 in C Minor, gigantic in all ways, represents the pinnacle of romantic emotion.
