Delve into the heart of jazz and blues improvisation in this workshop for musicians of all levels! Through guided exercises, listening, and performance, participants will learn how to build solos, develop phrasing, and interact with a rhythm section in real time. We’ll explore the language of the blues, call-and-response traditions, and the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic tools that give jazz its expressive freedom, all in a supportive, safe space.
This class meets from 7-8PM on the following Wednesdays: 10/1, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/12, 11/19, and 12/3.
This class is intended for learners 14+ of any skill level.
Location : Co-Creative Center, 137 Union St, New Bedford, MA

Emmanuel “Manny” Escobar is a dynamic musician and educator, with roots firmly planted in Jazz, R&B and Afro-Latin creative traditions. He is a graduate of the Alice S. Pfaelzer Conservatory at Merit School of Music and Berklee College of Music and studied under Jan Berry Baker at the Chicago College of Performing Arts. Emmanuel has performed and recorded with; Esperanza Spalding, Reggie Workman, Loren Allred, Mayra Andrade, Pentatonix, Thaddeus Hogarth, Louis Cato, Roberta Miranda, Jermaine Paul, Cesaria Evora Orchestra, Grace Evora, Mika Mendes, Boy Ge Mendes, Tito Paris, former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Emmanuel is an endorsing educator for Cannonball Musical Instruments, Rigotti Reeds and Syos Mouthpieces and a signed performing artist with Nightshift Entertainment - New England. He has served as adjunct faculty at Trinity Academy for the Performing Arts and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Music School, Music Director at Providence Country Day School, and as a teaching artist at AS220.

The Z’s Creative Classroom offers performing arts classes to learners of all ages and abilities in a variety of mediums. It’s a safe and inviting space for all to explore their curiosity and interest in the performing arts. This year, as the theater undergoes renovations, The Z’s Creative Classroom is on the road, offering classes in locations throughout the city. To lead these classes, we’ve selected the top teachers, performers, and artists in the Southcoast.
The box office is open for ticket sales two hours before a Mainstage performance and one hour before films and performances in the Speakeasy and at Stage Door Live. You can reach the box office by phone at (508) 994-2900 during business hours.
Tickets are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged unless the event is cancelled or postponed.
If an event is cancelled or postponed, you will have the option to receive a refund or credit, or you may donate the value of your ticket back to The Z.

There is a limit of up to 9 tickets for a single performance. To purchase 10 or more tickets for a single performance, please contact the box office at (508) 994-2900 for a group sale.
A ticket limit helps to ensure fairness in the market and mitigates the possibility of large numbers of seats being stockpiled by third-party sellers. Customers who are not making a group sale but attempt to manipulate or exceed ticket limits may have the entirety of their order(s) for that event cancelled.
At an artist's request, ticket limits may be less than 9 per order for their performance.
The Zeiterion prohibits cameras, sound recorders, and video equipment at performances.
Patrons are welcome to take photos from mobile devices before and after a show.

Please bring one chaperone for every 10 students.
We strongly recommend bringing one chaperone for every 10 students to ensure child safety and an enjoyable viewing experience for all. We welcome one free chaperone ticket per 10 student tickets with code TEACHER at check-out or reservation.
Adults without children are not permitted at Schooltime shows.
Unaccompanied adults are welcome to attend the public performance presentation when available, but Schooltime performances are for Pre-K through 12 students and teachers, home school communities, neurodiverse community organizations, and caregivers with children.
