This first-time landmark collaboration is more than a performance; it is a joyful homecoming that reaffirms the Zeiterion as a gathering place for creativity, connection, and community.

Get the Led Out is back!

From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) have captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians intent on delivering Led Zeppelin live. No wigs or fake English accents, GTLO brings what the audience wants...a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart thumping intensity.

A GTLO concert mimics the “light and shade” that are the embodiment of "The Mighty Zep." Whether it's the passion and fury with which they deliver the blues-soaked, groove driven rock anthems, it's their attention to detail and nuance that makes a Get The Led Out performance a truly awe-inspiring event!

Step into a world of beauty, drama, and deep emotion. Let the power of music celebrate the love and joy in your life. This concert is a musical journey that connects heart and soul.

We begin with Samuel Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal—a playful, high-spirited burst of wit and charm that sets the tone for a night of bold expression.

Violin soloist Jesse Holstein joins the orchestra for Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Violin Concerto—a lush, soulful work pulsing with lyricism and passion. Written by a brilliant Black British composer whose music was nearly lost to history, this concerto is a rediscovered gem that stirs the spirit and honors resilience.

We close with the sweeping beauty of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, "Winter Dreams"—a tender, evocative portrait of longing, memory, and the quiet magic of the season.

Let this concert be your midwinter reset—a chance to feel inspired, reconnected, and swept away by music that speaks directly to the heart.

A blend of Ukrainian traditional music with influences from around the world, resulting in an unexpected new music!

The groundbreaking quartet from Kyiv, Ukraine, is known for their hypnotic blend of folk traditions, dub, hip-hop and global influences to make what The Rolling Stone has called “folkdrone Bjorkpunk.” Their music is textural, layered sounds with distinctive percussive heartbeats, thumping bass lines, distorted electric guitars and influences of jazz, spoken word, rap and punk. They call this tapestry of influences “ethno chaos.” And this chaos is a strength, allowing them to draw in strands of music that connect Ukraine with the world.

DakhaBrakha are troubadours, activists and educators. Though their name means “give/take” in the old language, DakhaBrakha is new Ukraine, both pre-colonial and post-Soviet, working within a global network of art and music. They aim to help audiences see Ukraine not as a monolith, but as a cosmopolitan culture that takes in other cultures and gives in return.

Traditional music has seen a resurgence in Ukraine over the past decades, after being suppressed during Soviet rule. DakhaBrakha uses Ukrainian polyphony as its foundation, interweaving complex rhythmic and melodic structures from India, Arabia, Africa, and Australia.

DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by the avant-garde theatre director Vladyslav Troitskyi. Theatre work has left its mark on the band performances – their shows are always staged with a strong visual element. Projected behind them are a mix of animations from different Ukrainian artists and photos of life in today’s Ukraine. Some are celebratory, bright and bold. Some are dark, others curious, a reflection of the many facets of Ukrainian culture.

Avner Dorman: Eternal Rhythm, Percussion Concerto No. 2

Charles Ives: Symphony No. 2

This concert invites you to feel music in a whole new way—through bold rhythms and familiar melodies re-imagined that will move, surprise, and transform you.

Internationally acclaimed percussionist Cynthia Yeh takes center stage in Avner Dorman’s Eternal Rhythm, a percussion concerto that never stops pulsing, using 12 different percussion instruments accompanied by the orchestra. It's a high-energy exploration of all the sounds and beats these instruments can produce—at once visceral and transcendent. From thunderous strikes to shimmering textures, you’ll feel every heartbeat of this unforgettable piece.

Then, we turn to American iconoclast Charles Ives and his Symphony No. 2—a musical love letter to the American spirit. Blending classical form with hymn tunes, marching songs, and folk melodies, Ives creates a rich, surprising soundscape that feels both nostalgic and ahead of its time.

Together, these works celebrate invention, individuality, and the power of music to challenge, uplift, and connect us.

Take the plunge and let yourself be swept into the rhythm and melodies of unexpected places.

An evening of live music and narrated stories of some of the most influential songwriters! Live From Laurel Canyon centers on the musicians who lived in Laurel Canyon in the mid-1960s and ‘70s.

Similar to other legendary rock and roll neighborhoods of the same era (like Haight Ashbury in San Francisco or Greenwich Village in NYC), Laurel Canyon was a community of artists who would forge a new genre of music (Folk Rock) and forever change the look, sound and attitude of American pop music.

This show celebrates The Mamas and The Papas, the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Doors, Crosby, Stills, Nash, Neil Young, James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, America, and the Eagles with their own unique interpretations of some of the most iconic songs of the era.

Much more than a 'tribute' act, Live from Laurel Canyon not only performs the music you love in a new and unique way but shares with you the stories that inspired them. Live from Laurel Canyon is a journey through a special time in American pop music... won't you join us?

Led by celebrated vocalist and luminary Julia Keefe, the Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band (JKIBB) brings charisma, passion, and purpose to every stage – leaving audiences both inspired and educated.

JKIBB is an ensemble of Native and Indigenous jazz musicians from across Indian Country. Performing pieces from their under-appreciated predecessors in jazz, like Mildred Bailey (Coeur d’Alene) and Jim Pepper (Kaw/Mvskoke), alongside works by contemporary Indigenous composers, the band spotlights a vibrant, long-standing tradition of Indigenous improvised music today.

Julia (Nez Perce) and the band quickly gained a reputation for deepening and challenging our understanding of the “uniquely American” art form known as jazz. JKIBB features a ‘who’s who’ of Indigenous bandleaders today and has headlined marquee events including the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C in 2024.

Missy Mazzoli: River Rouge Transfiguration

Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 3

Michel Camilo: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.1

This concert is a celebration of transformation—of sound, of spirit, and of the boundless possibilities in music that dares to cross borders.

We begin with Missy Mazzoli’s River Rouge Transfiguration—a vivid, pulsing soundscape inspired by Detroit’s industrial heart. It's a musical metamorphosis, where steel and smoke give way to shimmering light and unexpected beauty.

Next, we dive into the rich, emotional landscapes of Brahms’ Symphony No. 3—a masterpiece of tenderness and passion. From its noble opening to its yearning finale, Brahms invites us into a world where strength and vulnerability exist in perfect harmony.

Finally, Dominican-born jazz and classical powerhouse Michel Camilo brings electrifying charisma to the stage with his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1. Blending Afro-Caribbean rhythms, jazz spontaneity, and classical grandeur, Camilo’s concerto is a thrilling ride—bold, joyful, and utterly alive. And the slow movement will stir your soul.

Feel the rush. Be transformed. Let the music take over.

Overture to Il Guarany by Antônio Carlos Gomes is an exhilarating Brazilian overture bursting with bold brass, sweeping romance, and heroic flair. It’s a dramatic invitation to shake off the everyday and step into something grand.

Venezuela’s Evencio Castellanos composed Santa Cruz de Pacairigua as a riotous, rhythmic celebration of life. With percussive exuberance and colorful soundscapes, it’s music that pulses through your body—reminding us to move, to dance, to feel joy.

The 3:30 PM performance is a breezy, one-hour concert—perfect for little ones (and early bedtimes). The 7:00 PM show runs a bit longer for those who want to soak up every sparkling note. Both performances are delightfully direct—no intermission, just nonstop joy.

Zeiterion Performing Arts Center

Yaniv Dinur, conductor
Jesse Holstein,violin

Samuel Barber: Overture to The School for Scandal

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor: Violin Concerto

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 1

Boldness Unbound

Zeiterion Performing Arts Center

Yaniv Dinur, conductor
Cynthia Yeh, percussion

Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 3

RACH N' SOUL

Oct 4 & 5, 3 PM

Many thanks to Patty Plum Wylde, whose generous Gift of Music has made this concert possible. She dedicates her gift to all teachers of music for their devotion to the art of making music eternal.

Begin in breath, end in brilliance—music that rocks your soul

Reena Esmail: Saans (Breath) (2017)
Sergei Rachmaninoff:
Sonata for Piano and Cello in G Minor, Op. 19
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:
String Quartet No. 19 in C Major, K. 465 "Dissonance"

EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks, violin
Theo Ramsey, violin
Anna Griffis, viola
Leo Eguchi, cello
Janice Weber, piano

Indian-American composer Reena Esmail’s soulful piano trio Saans (Breath) opens the program with her charismatic fusion of eastern and western traditions. In brilliant contrast, Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for Cello and Piano, written over a century earlier, is testament to the untrammeled passion and virtuosity for which he is celebrated. What better musical capstone than the elegant “Dissonance” quartet of Mozart, showing a master at the height of his creative powers.

A heartwarming and visually stunning performance that brings together music, dance, and projection to tell a story of a young boy, his grandfather, and their shared memories.

Created by director/choreographer Dominic Moore-Dunson, this dance production breathes life into “The Remember Balloons” story by bringing it to the stage, resulting in an experience built for the entire family.

James’s Grandpa has the best balloons because he has the best memories. He has balloons showing Dad when he was young and Grandma when they were married. Grandpa has balloons about camping and Aunt Nelle’s poor cow. Grandpa also has a silver balloon filled with the memory of a fishing trip he and James took together. But when Grandpa’s balloons begin to float away, James is heartbroken. No matter how hard he runs, James can’t catch them. One day, Grandpa lets go of the silver balloon— and he doesn’t even notice! Grandpa no longer has balloons of his own. But James has many more than before. It’s up to him to share those balloons, one by one.

Beautifully accompanied by an original score composed by Theron Brown. The show incorporates digital projections and voiceover narration to complement Moore-Dunson’s theatrical choreography.

Contains sensitive themes, including Alzheimer's disease and memory loss.

She celebrates the cultural heritage of her home but also asserts her African identity, seasoning Cape Verdean rhythms such as batuque, funaná, coladera, and tabanka with Latin energy for an unforgettable performance.

Born on the island of Santiago, Elida Almeida honed her vocal skills singing church hymns and developed her musical knowledge by hosting a radio show in Maio, where she grew up after her father’s death. Driven by a passion for education and a deep connection to her roots, she composed songs reflecting love and social concern.

Her debut album, Nta Konsigui, gained international attention when one of its songs was featured in the Portuguese TV soap A Unica Mulher. Awarded the RFI Découvertes prize in 2015, Elida’s warm and powerful voice quickly captivated audiences worldwide, earning her a place on major music stages across Europe, Africa, and North America.

Her second album, Kebrada, named after her childhood village, celebrates her African identity by blending Cape Verdean rhythms like batuque, funaná, coladera, and tabanka with Latin influences. Establishing herself as the voice of a new generation with Gerasonobu, Elida proudly serves as a spokesperson for her “little country,” Cape Verde.

Eight years after her 2014 debut, Elida’s 5th album, Di Lonji (“From Afar”), reflects on her extraordinary journey—from the remote interior of Santiago to performing in over 50 countries and receiving numerous awards. To commemorate her 10-year career, she released her first vinyl album, a limited edition of Di Lonji, featuring a stunning cover of “Estanhadinha” by Franck Cavaquim, originally recorded by Cesária Évora.

Elida Almeida’s career, marked by talent, tenacity, and deep respect for her roots, continues to inspire and resonate worldwide.

Our Story

Over the last 96 years, the Zeiterion Theatre has been a much-beloved place in New Bedford’s history. In 1923, the Zeitz brothers opened the Zeiterion as a grand Vaudeville house, with the vision of creating a “palace for the people.” At the time, the Zeiterion was one of nearly twenty theaters operating in the city of New Bedford. Shortly after opening, it transitioned to a movie house, and was renamed “The State Theatre.” Countless memories were made as the theater hosted opening nights for films such as “Moby Dick” and “Down to the Sea in Ships.” As time passed and people began seeking their entertainment elsewhere, the theatre fell dark and faced an uncertain future. Thanks to some visionary leaders, organizations like WHALE, and the support of this community, the Zeiterion was saved from the wrecking ball. In 1982, the Zeiterion Theatre was restored and reborn as a non-profit performing arts center, fondly called “The Z.” Today, The Z is a thriving home for live music, dance, theater, and film. It is a beacon for some of the best and brightest artists from around the world, exposing audiences of all ages to the power of the performing arts. Once one of many, The Z is now the last operating theater serving the city and a treasured landmark in downtown New Bedford. With the continued support of the community, The Z will remain at the center of cultural activity, entertaining and inspiring audiences for generations to come.

THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF THE Z’S STORY.
